December Newsletter 2025

December is a time of reflection, planning and well-earned downtime. In this edition, I’ve pulled together the most important HR, business and AI updates, along with guidance to help you navigate Christmas leave and end-of-year staffing smoothly.

Business Update – HR & SME Landscape

As we approach the end of the year, there are a number of developments that business owners and leaders should turn their attention to:

Labour market shifts
Australian job growth has slowed dramatically — only around 81,500 new jobs in the six months to October 2025, compared to over 151,000 in the previous period.
Implication: With hiring pressure easing, this is a good time for businesses to revisit workforce structures, ensure roles are optimised and prepare for 2026 with clarity rather than scramble in January.

SME cash-flow & payments challenges
Recent research indicates that many Australian SMEs are still reliant on manual payment and expense processes, heightening their exposure to delays and cost pressures.
Implication: As the year wraps up, reviewing internal workflows, digitising payment/expense processes and reducing manual steps can free up time and reduce risk heading into the new year.

End-of-year staffing & leave planning
With the festive season in full swing, it’s more important than ever to get your staffing, leave and notice-period frameworks in place. This includes:

  • Ensuring all annual leave balances are reviewed and communicated.
  • Confirming required notice periods for leave (especially across the holiday break).
  • Managing shifts/rosters for peak holiday demands (if applicable).

Tip: Issue your year-end staffing notice now so employees can plan and you can ensure coverage without last-minute surprises.
Spotlight on AI & Digital Transformation

The pace of digital change continues to gather momentum and for SMEs especially, the opportunity is real.

What’s happening now?

  • A recent report outlines that AI could add up to $142 billion annually to Australia’s GDP by 2030, with SMEs likely to achieve productivity gains up to 22% faster than larger firms.
  • At the same time, surveys show that while many SMEs are using AI tools, a large majority still do not have a formal AI strategy or roadmap in place.
  • Across the public sector, the Australian Public Service has launched its “APS AI Plan” — signalling the wider shift to AI-enabled operations. Department of Finance

What this means for your business:

  • AI shouldn’t just be a “nice-to-have” add-on. For maximum impact, it needs to be embedded into your core systems (CRM, ERP, HR workflows).
  • The real value comes when you align people + process + technology. Without process discipline and skills in place, AI can become under-used or risky.
  • Especially for SMEs: if you haven’t already, consider a “Digital & AI Readiness Review” before the year ends — map your current systems, data, skills, and governance so you can hit the ground running in 2026.

Quick action:
Schedule time this month to review:

  • What manual/repetitive tasks could be streamlined or automated?
  • What decision-points in your business could be supported by data/AI insights?
  • How prepared are your team and systems for 2026’s digital demands?
Christmas Leave & Staffing Checklist

As we enter the festive season, many businesses face the dual challenge of managing down-time (for closures) while staying responsive if operations continue. Here’s a checklist to help you stay organised:

  • Annual Leave Audit: Review all staff leave balances and communications. Confirm who is off and when and where the business needs coverage.
  • Notice Period & Policies: Remind staff of any required notice for leave. Provide clarity on any shutdown period (if applicable) or reduced hours over the holiday.
  • Rostering & Peak Hours: If your business has higher demand during December/January (e.g., retail, hospitality, service sectors) ensure rosters account for this — and that staff understand holiday shift arrangements.
  • Communication Plan: Communicate early to all staff about end-of-year expectations: closures, on-call arrangements, reduced hours, etc.
  • Return-to-Work Planning: Consider how you will manage staffing and operations when the year starts. Don’t assume a slow start — many businesses ramp up early in January.
  • Well-being & Culture: Encourage staff to take genuine breaks. A rested team returns more engaged and productive in the new year.
What’s Next for Evolve
  • We’ll be hosting a Digital & Leadership Roundtable in February 2026 — invitation to follow in January.
  • In January’s newsletter: we’ll feature a case study on how an SME aligned people and AI systems during their year-end freeze and maximised productivity in the new year.
  • If you’re ready to review your HR systems, digital roadmap or year-end staffing plan, let’s connect for a complimentary “Business Health Check”.

Thank you for reading our December update. If you found value here, we encourage you to share it with your network or your team.

If you’d like to explore any of these topics further — whether it’s staffing over the holidays, AI readiness, or building more efficient systems — we’re here to help.
